When I first travelled towards Yercaud, I did not plan to spend much time in Salem. I only stopped briefly before continuing the journey into the hills. But after exploring the city properly, I realised Salem has much more to offer than most travellers expect. With its busy streets, local food, markets, and cultural spots, it is well worth spending a day or two here before heading to Yercaud.
Salem and Yercaud: Understanding the Connection
Located in northwestern Tamil Nadu, Salem is the last significant urban settlement before a sharp elevation gain. Yercaud is approximately 30 km from Salem, at around 1515 m above sea level, and is about 45 minutes away by car via the Ghat road. Therefore, it is great to stay overnight in Salem.
Little-Known Places to Explore Around Salem
Before we get to hotels and their amenities, let us talk more about the lesser-known landmarks that Salem itself quietly offers.
Sankagiri Fort is one of those places that you may not find mentioned in most travel blogs. It is around 40 km away from Salem and has a fascinating history tied to Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. The views from the top are genuinely spectacular, and the fort sees very few tourists, which makes it feel like your own private discovery.
Yercaud Lake is the obvious attraction once you are up in the hills, but fewer people know about the Pagoda Point viewpoint and Lady’s Seat, two elevated spots near Yercaud that offer sweeping panoramas of the Salem plains below. On a clear morning, you can see Salem city stretching out far beneath you, which puts the whole journey into a wonderful perspective.
Mettur Dam, around 50 km from Salem, is another underrated gem. Built across the Kaveri River in 1934, it is one of India’s oldest large dams, and the reservoir behind it looks absolutely stunning at golden hour.
Where to Stay in Salem Before You Head to the Hills
Here comes the important bit. Choosing good hotels in Salem before your Yercaud trip genuinely sets the pace for everything that follows.
Hotel Geetha Park near Omalur Road is a popular choice among travellers heading to the hills. It is well located, well-furnished, and the staff are helpful with local travel tips. Rates are reasonable, and the rooms are comfortable enough to make you feel well-rested.
If you want to stay in a nice hotel with good food located right in the city centre near some great Biryani places, consider Hotel Salem Castle. The mixture of amenities there makes it a good choice. You are within walking distance of many different styles of Biryani, which is a good reason to choose this hotel.
If you are looking for a little more comfort, I would recommend staying at Hotel Sree Annapoorna or Arcot Plaza. I’ve met other tourists who prefer to stay here because they have well-furnished rooms that are equipped with Wi-Fi and air conditioning. Moreover, the property’s front desk staff are always helpful, making this establishment ideal for either in transit or passing through Salem, while continuing to Yercaud.
Another very popular choice among solo travellers and transit tourists on short stays is to consider Hotel Sri Vijay Vilas. Located right behind the bus station in Salem, you will find an excellent option if you want to make your way to Yercaud without having to rely on public transportation.
The Morning Drive Up
Leave Salem just after sunrise for an en route, scenic adventure. The ghat road to Yercaud winds through coffee estates and jackfruit groves, and as the morning mist wraps itself around the Shevaroy Hills, everything becomes rather magical very quickly.
Salem is not just a gateway. It is genuinely half the adventure.
